Translation of AutoCAD drawings
Tools Used
  • AutoCAD 2000
  • MS Excel

  • Visual Basic
  • Prompt XT (Translation Software)

The project involved translating AutoCAD drawing into a target language using third party translator software.

The Client: An Aeronautical Company in India
Business Model: Offshore time and material

The Challenge

In a Global business scenario, it is a requirement that the engineering drawings should be made available in the local language. This project involved translating the engineering drawings from Russian language to English. We customized the AutoCAD software to include a translator component for translating the drawing from source language to a target language. The system can be used in a stand-alone mode or in a network environment.

The Translator job involved:

  • Selecting the drawing area to be translated
  • Creating an Excel file of the text, dimension objects
  • Translating the Excel sheet into a target language
  • Uploading the file into AutoCAD drawing
  • Creating a configurable system for ease of use

The Solution

We chose the component driven approach for completing the translation job. This component sits on the top of AutoCAD application and works as a plug-and-play component.  The application translates the following objects from the selected areas of the drawing into a target language:

  • Text
  • Dimension
  • Multiline text
The user can opt to either replace the existing text or can append the same in a different layer, which is called 'translated' layer.  The style and rotation property of the original objects are retained as they were.

Benefits gained by the customer:

The customer saved several man-hours, which translated into huge saving in project costs by way of:

·         Manual translation: This is a labor-intensive and time-consuming activity and need people with special skills to perform the job.

·         Accuracy:Engineering drawings need accurate translations. A typo error because of operator mistake can cost the company dearly. The possibility of such kind of errors was eliminated completely.
